Social networking and the job search, or how I’ve been googling myself a lot lately

So how visible are we on the web? What are these series of tubes and those internets doing for us?

I’m trying to find out which social networking sites work best at actually making you visible to employers (or at least people looking for you on search engines). So far Jobster has blown them away for google results.

Here’s the details and a little history, because in all honesty it’s probably not a fair competition. This was an anecdotal study, but at the bottom line they are real world results.

I got my naymz account shortly after their launch when the buzz was hot. They were promising to get you on the first page of google’s results or something if I remember correctly. It was a no go. I was very turned off by their wanting more cash every time I turned around. I’m all about cheap networking. OK, free networking. My results on Yahoo are pretty good here at least. Second page though.

There’s a video producer who shares my name and he’s got a few videos on commerce sites who’s ranking is pretty high. At least higher than the stuff I’ve managed to be mentioned on.

Linkedin was next. That one popped to a high position on the goog for a while, but has since dropped. It does seem to actually be popular with quite a few people in my industry though, so I find it useful enough to keep checking it on occasion. I can’t believe they don’t make your name part of the url though. I can’t believe that they don’t make your name part of the url automatically though. That would be helpful.

I just found Jobster a few days ago. I filled out a few things on my profile last night and now Jeremy Marr is number three in google results. No word on Yahoo yet.

Zoominfo was low on the google results until some of the other sites were picked up. Same with Ziki. In all honesty I forgot about both of them until I was doing these searches for this post.
