What a speech should be like

I hope for more of this from our politicians. Both sides of the aisle (It is sad that there are only two sides in the US, I’d have thought we could do better by now).

Is this spin doctoring?

Yes.

Is it twanging at an important note in the American consciousness?

I hope so.

He’s probably the most likely of two evils. For whatever that’s worth…

I am not a consumer

Or my personal war on a word

My purpose here on this fine earth is not to be measured, tracked and judged solely by what I can purchase. It annoys me to no end how the media, especially marketing people, constantly refer to citizens, people and humans as “consumers.”

Stop putting this crap into our vernacular.

If people are buying stuff they are shoppers.

Don’t dehumanize us. That is the path to atrocity.

To be a person is so much more than the procurement of goods. Even in a capitalistic society. Stop trying to relegate us in the common consciousness as mouths that need to be fed. hungry chicks are consumersIf your world view is so limited that you can only think of people by how much they can spend, you are missing the point. And, by the way, if you fail to take the point into account it will lead to your ultimate failure.

If you want to sell somebody something, don’t externalize and turn it into a game of analytics and bean counting. It isn’t necessary. If you are a well rounded person with a variety of experiences and can empathize, you are golden. Trust yourself to go with your gut. Don’t organize a committee. At least keep your insulting industry jargon out of your news releases.

Take your own reaction as valid. It will serve you. If you make beautiful things, people will pay attention. That’s how to sell people things. Connect with them on an emotional level through aesthetics. That is how people usually buy things anyway: emotionally.

The attitude of consumerism is not sustainable. If you eat the earth there will be nothing left.

We are keepers, knowers, dreamers and doers. But not consumers. The closest people to that are those who need to call the fire department when they need to go to the doctor because they are so grossly obese they can no longer lift themselves. As someone who has had to listen to a lot of police scanners, I can tell you that there are entirely too many right now.

Do you think that will work for a market?

Very interesting interface for a desktop.

Reaching your ultimate dream

Sometimes we strive so hard for just a few fleeting moments of pure bliss. Kiwi would say it is all worth it I think.

Social networking and the job search, or how I’ve been googling myself a lot lately

So how visible are we on the web? What are these series of tubes and those internets doing for us?

I’m trying to find out which social networking sites work best at actually making you visible to employers (or at least people looking for you on search engines). So far Jobster has blown them away for google results.

Here’s the details and a little history, because in all honesty it’s probably not a fair competition. This was an anecdotal study, but at the bottom line they are real world results.

I got my naymz account shortly after their launch when the buzz was hot. They were promising to get you on the first page of google’s results or something if I remember correctly. It was a no go. I was very turned off by their wanting more cash every time I turned around. I’m all about cheap networking. OK, free networking. My results on Yahoo are pretty good here at least. Second page though.

There’s a video producer who shares my name and he’s got a few videos on commerce sites who’s ranking is pretty high. At least higher than the stuff I’ve managed to be mentioned on.

Linkedin was next. That one popped to a high position on the goog for a while, but has since dropped. It does seem to actually be popular with quite a few people in my industry though, so I find it useful enough to keep checking it on occasion. I can’t believe they don’t make your name part of the url though. I can’t believe that they don’t make your name part of the url automatically though. That would be helpful.

I just found Jobster a few days ago. I filled out a few things on my profile last night and now Jeremy Marr is number three in google results. No word on Yahoo yet.

Zoominfo was low on the google results until some of the other sites were picked up. Same with Ziki. In all honesty I forgot about both of them until I was doing these searches for this post.
